| Abstract: |
This paper undertakes a comparative study of Francis Bacon's Essays and Thiruvalluvar's Thirukkural with particular emphasis on their shared concern for moral wisdom, ethical conduct, and social responsibility. Although separated by differences of language, culture, and historical context, both writers seek to guide human behavior through practical wisdom and enduring moral values. The study examines their views on virtue, truth, education, friendship, leadership, and human nature, highlighting the universal principles that underpin their ethical thought. Bacon's essays reflect the pragmatic spirit of Renaissance humanism, while Thiruvalluvar's couplets embody the moral and philosophical richness of classical Tamil literature. Through a comparative analysis, the paper demonstrates that both texts advocate integrity, self-discipline, compassion, and justice as essential foundations of individual and social well-being. The discussion further explores the relevance of their teachings to contemporary concerns regarding ethical leadership, community welfare, and responsible citizenship. By bringing together two influential voices from distinct literary traditions, the study reveals the universality of moral wisdom and its continuing significance in promoting human development and social harmony. The comparison underscores the role of literature as a source of ethical guidance and social awareness across cultures and generations. |
