| Abstract: |
The present study is an attempt to explore the all-pervading impact of faculty politics, ego clashes and negative interpersonal relationships in the academic environment of higher education institutions in Kerala, India. Data collection was done based on a descriptive research design from 177 respondents (Faculty members, students, research scholars, and administrators) in Arts and Science colleges along with a few MBA institutions of the economic and IT hub of the state, Ernakulam district. A structured questionnaire was used and adapted from previously created questionnaires for academic toxic dynamics, which were analysed by Exploratory Factor Analysis and Chi-Square tests to explore the relationship between the different stakeholder categories, gender and workplace toxicity experience. The results indicated that a high percentage of conflicts in the classroom are based on the individual's ego, and these conflicts have a significant impact on the quality of education provided in the classroom, especially for female teachers who experienced higher emotional and psychological distress. The Inter-faculty competition was identified as a problem that led to the breakdown of the coordination of the departments and the planning of the institution. Students and research scholars were the most vulnerable stakeholders who are often caught in the middle of faculty conflicts. The study highlights the need for emotionally intelligent leadership, an open grievance process and gender responsive institutional policies to make the academy an atmosphere of academic integrity and professional dignity. |
