| Abstract: |
The crisis of identity has remained one of the defining concerns of modern literature, reflecting the psychological and existential uncertainties experienced by individuals in a rapidly changing world. Saul Bellow's Herzog (1964) presents a compelling portrayal of this crisis through the character of Moses Herzog, a middle-aged intellectual whose personal and professional life has fallen into disarray. Following the collapse of his marriage and the erosion of his emotional stability, Herzog embarks on an inward journey marked by self-examination, doubt, and reflection. Through a series of unsent letters addressed to friends, family members, philosophers, and public figures, he attempts to understand the causes of his suffering and redefine his place in the modern world. This paper examines Herzog's identity crisis as a manifestation of the fragmented condition of modern man. It argues that Herzog's psychological turmoil arises from the conflict between intellectual idealism and lived reality, between personal aspirations and social expectations. The novel presents identity not as a fixed or stable entity but as a fluid and evolving process shaped by memory, experience, and self-awareness. Herzog's struggle reflects the broader predicament of modern individuals who seek coherence in a world characterized by uncertainty and alienation. By tracing the protagonist's movement from emotional disintegration to a tentative acceptance of self, Bellow reveals the complexities of modern existence and the possibility of personal renewal. Ultimately, Herzog emerges as a profound exploration of selfhood, alienation, and the enduring human search for meaning. |
